Taking vegie seeds from Australia to India

I’m flying into Delhi. Friends in India have asked me to bring some veg seeds from my garden to theirs.

Home-grown seeds in home-made packets. Hmm. I figure this could be a quarantine and/or customs issue.

Is this legal? I can see from various government and other websites that ‘some plant material’ is prohibited but no specifics.

Can anyone direct me to the most reliable/detailed quarantine weblink? Or does anyone know for sure?

I figure this could be a quarantine and/or customs issue.

You figgered right.

Nope. And if I told you to wrap them up in your dirty underwear and lie on the form, that’d prolly be agin the law, too. So I won’t say it.

Fairly decent veggie seeds can be found in India, Delhi likely easier than most.

From what I’ve seen in customs, it may be a problem and a no no. Normally customs prefer organic material be properly packaged and labelled commercially.

Technically speaking it may be prohibited because it may cause some kind of damage to the environment in some way. particularly seeds that will be intentionally grown there. My intuition says don’t bring them but then again if you declare them like you are supposed to, they will either destroy them or give them back to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are any of your seeds GMO (Genetically modified organisms) ?

No we do not sell any GMO seeds or plants.

What is the difference between GMO and Hybrid seeds?

GMO seed varieties are created in a lab using high-tech and sophisticated techniques like gene-splicing. Although by regulation, it has to be certified to be safe for human consumption, the long term effects of consuming the resulting produce are not known.

Hybrid seeds, on the other hand are produced by cross-pollinating two varieties of the same plant, where desirable traits of each parent plant may be passed onto the successive generation (F1). This actually occurs all the time in nature and the resulting plant and fruit (or vegetable) is safe to consume.

Can we pick up our seed order rather than having it mailed?

We are strictly a mail-order company, and there is no direct outlet for pickup of plants or seeds.

Do you carry seeds for Tindora (ivy gourd), parval (pointed gourd) or Kantola?

No, we do not carry seeds for any of the above, because they are best propagated by cuttings. We do offer Tindora cuttings and potted plants from April to November. We are constantly trying to import Parval and Kantola for the US market, but with limited success thus far.

Do you carry seeds for Curry Leaf (Murraya koenigii), Neem tree (Azadirachta indica) or parijat (Nyctanthes arbor-tristis)?

Unfortunately, seeds for Curry-leaf, Neem tree and Parijat need to be be planted soon after harvest, and do not store well (Recalcitrant seeds), so we do not usually carry seeds for these varieties. However, during the warm months (April to November) we do carry live plants of Curry leaf and occasionally Neem tree.

Do you ship outside the US?

We can ship small seed orders outside the USA. However we cannot ship plants or bulk seed orders without the appropriate USDA certificates.

What are the shipping and handling charges for seeds and or plants?

Within the USA: We charge a flat $5.95 for any number of packets of seeds. Seeds are shipped USPS 1st Class. You will receive tracking information from Stamps.com.

For overseas orders kindly select “For orders outside USA only via USPS 1st Class” when checking out. The 1st Class shipping charge overseas is $14.45. You may also choose International Priority Mail for speedier service ($ 37.00)

For plants, the shipping costs vary depending on the number of plants. In general, the rates are $11.45 for the first plant, then it is $5.50 per additional plant. If you order seeds at the same time, they will be enclosed with your plant(s), and there is no further charge. Plants are shipped by USPS Priority mail.

All shipping and handling charges are added automatically when you place your order.

How quickly will I get my seed/plant order?

We pride ourselves in our quick turnaround. Once we receive your order, it is often mailed within 3 business days. During early spring when order volume is high, there may be an additional lag of 1-2 days before shipping. Plants are sent out all year round, except in January through April due to cold weather. They are shipped 2nd day Priority Mail.
