Residents of Colorado are welcome to grow weed at home, as long as they follow the laws around cultivation. With the passage of Amendment 64, Colorado recreational dispensaries can legally sell cannabis seeds to adults over 21 of age. Colorado law also requires that the plants be grown in an enclosed, locked space that is not “open” or “public”.

The Rules of Buying Marijuana Seeds at a 420 Dispensary

Like buying any other product from dispensaries, buying seeds comes with its own set of rules. As with buying weed itself, you need to be 21 years of age or older to buy seeds at a Colorado recreational dispensary. You’ll need valid government-issued ID. You’re also not allowed to give or sell seeds to minors.

While anyone from around the world can come to Colorado to buy cannabis seeds from a 420 dispensary, there are a lot of rules governing who can grow weed and where. Read on!

Possession of cannabis, including seeds, is mostly illegal in the United States. It is still illegal federally. If you live in Colorado, you’re fine to grow weed under the cultivation limits. If you’re from somewhere where it’s still illegal to possess and/or grow cannabis, you shouldn’t buy seeds and take them out of Colorado – if it’s still against the law where you are, you could face harsh penalties.

Choosing Your Cannabis Seeds

As many smokers know, there are different strains of cannabis, and thus seed, for every desired trait and every type of person. There are countless strains of marijuana out there, and The Spot 420 dispensaries stock a wide variety of products for you to try growing. How you know which marijuana strain to choose?

In most cases, it’s a matter of personal preference. Most people should choose between indicas or sativas (or grow both!) to start.

The Difference Between Growing Indica and Sativa

Sativas will grow quickly. They’ll get quite tall in the course of the season. With this type of plant, you’re looking at an energetic, “up” high.

Indicas are shorter and denser. They mature faster than sativas once they start flowering. People generally call the stone from these plants more of a body buzz.

Of course, there are hybrid seeds, which have individual characteristics depending on the percentage of indicas and sativas in each plant. When you make your seed selection at a 420 dispensary, think about the type of growth and maturation you want in your plant, and the type of high you’re looking for.

Generally, to get the most bang for your buck, look for seeds of plant strains that are proven to have large yields and a high THC content. Buying cheap seeds isn’t worth it, most of the time. You’re likely to end up with plants that fail to grow into anything worthwhile. When you consider how much weed you can get out of a single plant, it makes sense to invest in high-quality seeds, which should turn into high-quality bud!

You can find out how seeds are harvested and stored. Seeds should be fully matured before they are harvested for sale. They need to be stored in dark, cool places, and used within 16 months, or frozen for future use. If not, you’ll end up with seeds that have been spoiled by mold and other nasty developments, so be sure to ask if you aren’t sure of how the seeds were kept.

Where to Find Cannabis Seeds in Colorado

Saturday April 11, 2015

T he weather is warming up which means it’s time to start planning your outdoor grow. If you’ve been thinking about growing marijuana outdoors here in Colorado (or pondering a move to our fine state so that you can), then you’ll need something to help you get started.

One option is to start with clones of other “mother” plants. You could get clones from friends or buy a few from a place like LaContes Clone Bar or Ballpark Holistic Dispensary, but it is important to remember that bringing clones into your grow might also introduce contaminants such a pests and disease to your other plants, though this is less of an issue when growing outdoors. Clones also tend to be less capable of handling stress and often experience transplant shock if not thoroughly rooted, so be sure to check your clones before purchase.

If you’ve got a collection of “bag seeds”, you can try sprouting them indoors for future transplant, but keep in mind that these seeds might not be as viable as the ones you’d get from a dispensary or breeder. They may thrive indoors, for example, then burn up outdoors or offer little resistance to pests.

To ensure you have the most success in your outdoor grow when starting from seed, we suggest finding some from a reputable genetics lab or a dispensary with a proven track-record of high-quality buds.

Employees at these locations will also have a slew of information for you about each strain, including plant characteristics, temperament and expected harvest time. When you purchase your seeds, be sure to consult your budtender about best growing practices for each seed.

Of course, you won’t be able to sprout cannabis seeds without knowing how to find them first. Though there are a number of dispensaries that occasionally sell marijuana seeds, there are only a few that continuously offer high-quality seeds at affordable prices.

Here are some our favorite places to find marijuana seeds in Colorado.

The Farm – Boulder

The Farm has been a very popular dispensary in Boulder for many years, serving up some of the best cannabis in Colorado. They even offer an extensive line of F1 seeds (for both home-growers and the wholesale market) so that anyone of legal age can grow their renowned genetics at home. For consumers, seeds are sold in packs of 6 ranging from $30-60 and are available in a variety of strains. You can even order the seeds online and pick them up in the store at a later time. Check out some of our favorite seeds that The Farm offers:

  • Cherry Elixir: A 1:1 THC to CBD ratio, Cherry Elixir is an excellent strain for consumers seeking a therapeutic experience that calms the body and mind. It has a sweet, sugary flavor with rich cherry notes that will appeal to anyone looking for flavorful consumption. Plus, it’s a perfect strain to grow indoors!
  • Mountain Thunder: Although Mountain Thunder is a sativa-dominant hybrid, The Farm’s team of expert growers have carefully employed selective breeding tactics to boost CBGA in the strain and eliminate the raciness or paranoia sometimes associated with sativa consumption. As a result, Mountain Thunder provides consumers a clean, clear-headed high that’ll keep you focused throughout the day.
  • Strawberry Blonde: Fans of big buds, strong potency and high yields will love Strawberry Blonde. This sativa-dominant hybrid has proven to produce extremely robust plants that smell and taste delicious. Even better, most plants test at approximately 20% THC and provide very euphoric, heavy head highs.

Colorado Seed Inc – Various Locations

Colorado Seed Inc has been developing their genetics in Boulder, Colorado since 2008. They currently offer 24 different strains of seed, including Ghost Ship, Bootlegger and Night Nurse. Colorado Seed Inc only sells wholesale, but you can find a list of dispensaries that carry their products on their website. Finding marijuana in Colorado is easy enough; finding seeds, on the other hand isn’t quite there yet. Though there are some very reputable stores where you can find high-quality cannabis seeds in Colorado, those places are not as common as the average dispensary.

Because of the limited number of seed distributors in Colorado, many residents have turned to online orders. Though this can be a great way to find new and exciting strains, there is still risk involved ordering online. To ensure you get the seeds you want when you want them, we suggest shopping local as much as possible.

If you prefer to order online, we have heard good feedback about Growers Choice Seeds, which has operations in the US and Canada.

What Makes Our Feminized Hemp Seed Different?

Guaranteed Plant Count Germination

Starter Packs– The germination rate for our feminized hemp seed exceeds 90%, depending on the batch. We add 10% to any feminized hemp seed Starter Pack to make sure our hemp farmers have all the plants they planned for. If the order is for 100 female hemp seeds we will ship 110 seeds.

Bulk Hemp Seed Orders – We guarantee a 100% germination plant count on all bulk hemp seed orders of our feminized hemp seed strains. We extensively test the germination rate after we harvest our feminized hemp seed batches. If the batch’s germination rate is 95% we add an additional 5% to the order. For example, if the bulk seed order is for 10,000 seeds, and the batch tests to a 95% germination rate we will ship 10,500 seeds.

S1 Feminized Hemp Seed for Growing

S1 seeds are the first selfed generation grown from the originally selected F1 phenotype. Our Mountain Mango feminized hemp seed is grown using our original F1 female that we selected a couple years ago, we make our seed from the same living plant now as then. It has proven to be a stable phenotype in the field, exhibiting consistent characteristics. Our Quick Kush feminized hemp seed is an F1 phenotype from the same parents as Mountain Mango but exhibits an entirely different phenotype.

Our S1 Cherry Wine feminized hemp seed is produced from the F1 phenotype created by the breeder of Cherry Wine – “Bohdi”. We make seed from the original living plant. Many of the Cherry variety of hemp seeds for growing in the market are S2, S3, S4…. generations, not produced from the original F1, but from an S1 or other selfed generation of feminized hemp seed, not the original living F1 phenotype, which contributes to an unstable crop in the field.

Feminized Hemp Seed Cross-Pollination

We are one of the seed companies for hemp farming that produce our female hemp seed for growing under complete environmental control with our state-of-the-art indoor grow rooms in Colorado. Indoor hemp plant grow rooms cost more to build as well as to power the lights and air-conditioning – but we make up for it in high-quality mature feminized hemp seed and peace of mind. Besides the fact that we can pamper each hemp plant, we practically eliminate the possibility of cross-pollination, which can easily happen when feminized hemp seed is produced in a greenhouse or worse, a building with several hemp strains growing in it.

This has been a big problem for the medical and recreational cannabis industries, because every hemp farmer wants to have a crop of 100% female hemp plants that exhibit a consistent phenotype. Cross-pollination results when pollen from ‘foreign’ sources fertilize the hemp seed stock females and produce male and female hemp seed of unknown parentage. Trying to produce a 100% pure hemp strain seed in a greenhouse is risky and difficult because natural forces can bring in foreign pollen from miles away, be it from other hemp farmer’s crops, licensed and unlicensed cannabis grows or ‘ditch weed’. We only grow our feminized hemp seed indoors, in environmentally controlled grow rooms.

Separate Indoor Grow Facilities for Each Female Hemp Strain

Cross-pollination is the reason female hemp seed sold as 100% feminized will have true males in the seed mix. It’s scientifically impossible for feminized pollen and a female hemp plant to produce a male hemp seed. A true male hemp plant is different from a female hemp plant showing ‘hermaphroditic’ characteristics. Any female hemp plant grown from feminized hemp seed (or ‘regular’ hemp seed), can show male pollen sacs mixed among the female hemp flowers – if stressed enough during the growth cycle – but they are not true male hemp plants with ‘y’ chromosomes, if seeds are produced they will all be female hemp seed or what we call feminized hemp seed .

Cheyenne Mountain Seed Company is totally committed to the hemp growing success of our hemp farmer’s crops. We make every effort and spare no expense to ensure that our hemp farmers are planting the purest Colorado hemp seed with the most consistent and stable phenotype replication. We only offer three feminized hemp strains because we grow them in three totally separate facilities across Colorado Springs, one hemp strain per building, that way we prevent cross-pollination of our feminized hemp seed crops within our company’s facilities.

Evaluating CBD Hemp Strains for Growing

If someone looking to buy hemp seeds for growing asks, “What percentage of CBD will this hemp strain’s flower produce?”, they are asking the wrong question. This is a fact though: all hemp strains for growing CBD oil will test over the legal limit of 0.3% depending on growing conditions. Some of these growing conditions are:

  • Vegetation period
  • Number of days in flower before harvesting
  • Latitude and photoperiod
  • Ambient day and night temperatures
  • Nutrient program
  • Irrigation system
  • Idiosyncrasies peculiar to the hemp strain

Because of the hemp regulations we work under, it makes a lot more sense to ask the question, “What percentage of CBD will this hemp strain’s flower produce when the legal level approaches 0.3%?”. Unfortunately, an exact answer to that question is virtually impossible to predict. For tips and additional information, check out our resources for growing hemp plants.

Growing conditions listed above vary day-to-day and year-to-year. Historical test results, done at least weekly, over several hemp growing seasons at a particular location would begin to more accurately answer the question based on empirical data – but this industry is so new, data like that is very rare.
