Gelato Weed – Everything you need to know and more!
If you don’t know Gelato by now, let us do you a favor and introduce you. It’s the literal definition of a dankenstein strain. In fact, it’s a dank dankenstein strain. Named after the Italian word for ice cream, Gelato brings together two dankenstein strains to make one of the strongest and best-tasting strains in today’s modern world. Gelato was created in California, just like most of these dankenstein monsters. You should smoke Gelato with caution, as it may blow your mind if you’re a relatively new smoker.
This strain, alongside things like Thin Mint, is considered to be some of the best strains of all time. A partial list of some of the best strains of all time is as follows:
- Thin Mint strain
- Gelato 25, 33, 41, 45
- Orange Kush strain
- Sour Mango strain
- Birthday Cake strain
- Pink Berry strain
- And much more
Have opinions on that list? Drop us a comment!
Some people call the Gelato strain Gelato Kush, Gelato Cookies, Gelato hybrid, Bacio Gelato strain, flower Gelato, etc.

Gelato: Hybrid, Indica or Sativa?
Gelato is a hybrid. Most of the strains created these days are hybrids, many of which are 50/50 hybrids. The reason for this is more and more people are beginning to favor balanced hybrids for their ability to make you feel like you’re receiving a warm hug from someone you love, while also experiencing those head massagers that feel so damn good. You know, the spiky ones that no-one is really sure why they feel so good, but damn do they. Gelato, and a growing list of dankenstein strains, are 50/50 hybrids for this exact reason.
San Francisco breeders, Cookie Fam Genetics, decided that Sunset Sherbert and Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies weren’t good enough on their own. Nope. They decided to take these two dank strains and mix them together. The final product was Gelato. They picked the thirty-third (33rd) phenotype and this because known as Gelato, or Larry Bird. Larry Bird being number 33 for one of the teams out on the West Coast:
- Sunset Sherbert
- Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies
Not only did Cookies Fam Genetics decide to use Girl Scout Cookies, they decided to use the prized phenotype of GSC, Thin Mint GSC.
Gelato THC percentage
What is considered high THC? Remember that the average hybrid strain contains around 13% THC, so anything that’s higher than this is considered a strain that has high THC value. Gelato weighs in at around 25%, which is a strong THC percentage. Though this isn’t the strongest strain compared to others out there, it’s also not one that you’re going to want to take away endlessly on.
Gelato is a boutique dankenstein strain. It’s incredibly expensive. In North America it’s about $20 a gram, give or take depending on the dispensary you visit. However, in Amsterdam the price is much higher. That is because supply is incredibly low (only about 1/10 coffeeshops will have this strain), which drives the price up. You’re looking at spending about $40 a gram. It’s unfortunate, but it’s worth the price if you use something like a flower vaporizer .
As mentioned before, Gelato is worth paying $40 a gram for if you’re smoking through a flower vaporizer. That is because it’s far more efficient to use these to get high. It’s actually better, flavor-wise, to vape because there’s no combustion of plant material. However, Gelato is one of those strains that tastes so damn good that it doesn’t really matter how you smoke it. Just make sure you grind it up first. The full taste profile of Gelato is:
Gelato oil, wax, shatter, edibles, etc.
This strain is a very popular choice for concentrate creators thanks to the combination of its high potency and fantastic taste. Many companies pick Gelato to be one of their cartridges as well; they know a Gelato cartridge will sell well since it’s such a well-known dankenstein strain.
Edibles don’t generally require any special strains to make. Flavour and potency are the same regardless of what strain you use because you’re mixing it with so many other things. However, some edible companies do like to use danker strains with a recognized taste (like OG Kush chocolate bars), because they can make them taste like OG Kush, which is a very desirable flavor. Basically, it’s kind of pointless using Gelato to make edibles, because it’s so damn expensive. However, you could use your leftover Already Vaped Bud (AVB) mixed with a fat or oil, to easily make edibles using Gelato strain.
How you consume your concentrates matters! Personally, we’re a fan of Yocan’s Evolve über portable vape pen. Take it wherever you go, or sit at home and soak into the couch without the hassle of having to roll a joint.

Gelato, being that it’s a 50/50 balanced hybrid, is great for stress and depression. The crossing of the Sativa and Indica highs are what make this such a good strain for both of these. While no one enjoys dry eyes, the beautiful purple hues and orange hairs mean this Cooke Fam creation is about to take very good care of you thanks to the effects of a perfect Indica and Sativa blend.
However, Gelato should not be considered a catch-all before you try it. No one can tell you what strain is right for your condition, or if weed is even the right treatment for you. The best thing you can do is experiment with a few different types of strains, and if nothing works you can give CBD oil a try. If this doesn’t work, then maybe cannabis isn’t for you. You just have to experiment – thoughtfully!
Gelato flowering time
The flowering time of Gelato is around 8-9 weeks. If you leave this strain for the full 9 weeks, you’ll give it time for the famous flavor everyone bangs on about so much. Additionally, the potency is more likely to be higher if you let it grow longer.
Gelato growing tips
This strain should be topped, and if you want this strain to have the purple hues that make it so famous, you should also expose the plant to colder temperatures during the vegetative stage. This strain is incredibly pungent whilst growing, so you should probably get some kind of filter or exhaust for an indoor to grow.
The seeds for Gelato are not available online. You probably won’t be able to find this strain (this is what makes it such a pricey strain in Amsterdam). Only the coffeeshops with the best connections to the West Coast have this strain, which also means they can charge a premium.
If you’re growing your own Gelato, keep these precious seeds going strong with the proper tools. A pH meter is a helpful tool! We like the Vivosun 4-in-1 digital pH meter, which also has a temperature feature on the digital screen.
If you do manage to find this strain to grow, you will find that it has an average to high yield, just like its parents.

What is the Gelato strain? A summary.
Not all cannabis strains are created equal, and Gelato definitely stands out for all of the right reasons. Gelato is one of the pioneering strains created by Cooke Fam Genetics in the Bay Area of California. It’s a dankenstein strain, meaning it takes two already dank strains and mixes them together. It’s a very famous strain, that tastes great and is high in potency. It’s quite hard to find outside of California, however. You can find it in Amsterdam, but you’ll be paying at least $40 a gram for it.
- Seeds aren’t available online
- One of the dankest cannabis strains!

- Available primarily in North America and Amsterdam

RQS Gelato Strains: All of Our Sweet Gelato Genetics Detailed
It’s not uncommon to smell cannabis before you see it. As one of the nicest-smelling plants on Earth, cannabis produces a wide array of terpenes that contribute to its signature aromas and mouth-watering flavours. Over time, breeders have teased out certain terpene profiles to elevate these tastes to a whole new level. The story of Gelato shows just how far cultivators have pushed the boundaries of flavour.
Created in San Francisco, Gelato has since stormed the global cannabis community, leaving activated taste buds in its wake. Legendary breeder and creator of famous cannabis genetics—one Mr. Sherbinski—crafted the cultivar using a blend of Girl Scout Cookies and Sunset Sherbet. Both of these varieties were already known for their delicious phytochemicals, so combining the two was destined to be a success.
After stabilising the cultivar and sampling the taste, Sherbinski reasoned that only one name was worthy of this scrumptious strain: Gelato. Named after the famous frozen Italian dessert, the tastes of sweet fruit and sugary cream are almost identical.
However, many cannabis lovers also know the variety by the name of NBA star Larry Bird. Sherbinski and his crew released numerous phenotypes of Gelato, with pheno 33 emerging as the most popular. This number also happens to be the dual digits printed on Bird’s Boston Celtics jersey.
After Gelato’s success, many breeders used these premium genetics to create equally tasty hybrids. Here at Royal Queen Seeds, our world-class breeding team has developed cultivars that are arguably superior to the original strains. Check out our four favourites below.
Wedding Gelato: The marriage of Wedding Cake And Gelato
To create this flavourful strain, our breeders combined Gelato with another taste bud-teasing variety: Wedding Cake. Wedding Gelato emerged from this combination not only as a mouth-watering treat, but as one of the most potent strains on the market. Her pretty purple flowers produce THC levels of 25% alongside high levels of the terpenes caryophyllene, limonene, and humulene.
This slightly indica-dominant strain delivers a finely balanced high that makes the body feel heavy and relaxed, and the mind light and witty. Enjoy her sweet and sugary flavour through a vape to really capture this unique and moreish terpene profile.
Wedding Gelato grows to a medium height and puts out a rewarding yield in almost any environment. Indoor plants peak at 100cm and produce 450–500g/m² after a short flowering time of 8–9 weeks. If you’re growing her outdoors, prepare to harvest up to 400g/plant in early October.

Cookies Gelato: The Mouthwatering Mix of Girl Scout Cookies And Gelato 33
Cookies Gelato combines the tantalising tastes of Gelato 33 with the sugary flavours and insane potency of Girl Scout Cookies—the progeny of the legendary OG Kush. Experienced growers accustomed to the effects of THC seek out this strain to experience the same high as a complete beginner. Why? Because she contains a THC content of 28%. A single toke blasts the brain and ignites a long-lasting psychoactive experience. If you really want to push the boat out, add this strain to edibles and hold on tight!
Cookies Gelato treats the tongue to contrasting yet complementary flavours of candy, earthiness, and citrus. Her tall and wide colas weigh heavy with a viscous resin loaded with terpenes that refresh the brain and bring a stimulating energy to a primarily stoning experience.
The strain delivers these potent colas in no short supply. Indoor plants easily produce 500–600g/m², whereas outdoor specimens put out 600–650g/plant. Despite her big yields, she’ll be ready to harvest after a brief flowering period of 8–9 weeks.

Green Gelato: A refreshing combo of Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies and Sunset Sherbet
Our breeders created Green Gelato by crossing Sunset Sherbet with Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies. Our team was blown away by both the potency and aromatic explosion that lies within these flowers. After sobering up, they took these buds to the lab and discovered an astronomical THC content of 27% alongside sky-high levels of caryophyllene, humulene, and limonene.
Green Gelato’s slightly indica-dominant terpene profile sends a soothing shockwave across the body, but it won’t lull you to sleep. The sativa elements of the high keep the mind ticking, allowing you to enjoy music and films in all their glory without nodding off.
Green Gelato produces a respectable 500–700g/m² when grown indoors. Try cultivating several plants together and utilising SOG or ScrOG techniques to maximise your yield. Outdoor plants grown in garden beds will adapt to increased space and produce a massive 800g/plant, ready in early October.

Perfect for beginners, Green Gelato Automatic boasts hardy genetics and leaves significant room for error. She’ll recover from small mistakes and laughs in the face of pests and pathogens.

Immense tastes of earthiness and sweetness will leave you coming back for more.
