Red lava sand

Did anyone else catch the article in the av magazine about adding red lava sand to the soil of the yellow bloom violets to bring out the yellow. I have no idea where to find that. I asked around and no one knows anything about it. I bought a bag of the red lava rocks at home depot and hammered some down. I mixed it in the yellows soil and will wait and see if anything happens..it will be better draining soil, ha. tish

I also caught the article in AVM Tish. I was kind of thinking that it would be iron in the red lava sand that might help promote yellow in blooms so I thought I’d mix a little Iron Chelate in my potting mixture the next time I transplant one of my *yellow* ones. BTW – Summer Carnival is another one that shows quite a bit of yellow and has some fantasy to boot!

Oh good! I have have Summer Carnival but it is still a baby plant. I have red Georgia clay, I was vagely thinking I could add some of my “red dirt” and see what happened. but I wouldn’t guess its iron that makes it “orange”. I have about 12 named yellow varieties (only Lollipop has bloomed and each time a little more yellow is in the bloom if I look closely, it’s faint) most all young plants not old enough to bloom, I’m hoping to have one of them be yellow enough to actually call it yellow and not white!

Please post back if you get some yellow from your iron chelate!
